Go Back in Time at Historical Savannah
Established in 1733, Savannah boasts a rich and colorful history that spans nearly 300 years. Founded by James Edward Oglethorpe and a group of English settlers, Savannah was transformed from a dense and swampy wilderness to a bustling port famed for exporting cotton, its beautiful tree-filled squares and blended architecture.
During the Civil War, Savannah was the prize at the end of the Union army’s “March to the Sea.” Spared by General William Tecumseh Sherman, the city was given as a “Christmas Gift” to President Abraham Lincoln on December 22, 1864.
“I beg to present you, as a Christmas Gift, the city of Savannah.”
—General Sherman to President Lincoln, December 22, 1864
